Indeed, the process of learning music can be frustrating. Thus, you must try to inculcate the meaning of patience in their minds even at the initial stage of teaching music.

The Life and Songs of American Composer Stephen Foster

 Stephen Collins Foster, the “father of American music,” wrote songs in the nineteenth century that live on to this day. He was the forerunner of today’s professional songwriter, though he died in poverty. He expanded the musical tastes of America like no other before him.

Born in Pennsylvania, Foster was one of ten children. Though his family was middle class when he was young, his father’s descent into alcoholism impoverished them. Foster took to songwriting, though he had little formal training on the piano. When he was eighteen, he published his first song.

While he lived in Pittsburgh, Stephen Foster met his two pivotal influences. One was a music store owner from Germany named Henry Kleber. Kleber was classically trained and taught Foster proper technique and musical theory. The other was a blackface singer named Dan Rice that introduced Foster to a completely different style of music. Foster was intrigued by both the classics and the minstrel songs, and he learned to combine the two worlds into one musical genre.

Stephen Foster relocated to Cincinnati to work with his brother’s steamship company. While there, he would write his first hit. “Oh Susanna” became the de facto theme song of the California Gold Rush of 1848. Since songwriting royalties were unheard of at the time, he received one hundred dollars for one of the most well-known songs of all time. If he were alive today, a hit of its magnitude would make him a millionaire many times over.

He moved back to Pittsburgh soon after and wrote many other hit songs under contract with Christy Minstrels. Two of these songs, “Camptown Races” and “Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair” are still well known today. The latter was referenced in the song “Sins of the Father” by maverick songwriter Tom Waits on his 2004 album Real Gone.

Copyright laws for songwriting were in their infancy at the time, so Stephen Foster was often in poverty. He soldiered on and kept writing despite his lack of money. His wife and daughter left him in 1861 after moving to New York City. The quality of his songs began to decline, and the Civil War destroyed the market for new songs. Foster tried using a co-writer to help him gain ground with new audiences, but he failed miserably.

Stephen Foster died with thirty-eight cents to his name at the young age of thirty-seven. He collapsed while trying to call a chambermaid and cut his head open on a broken washbasin. A scrap of paper was found in his wallet that read, “Dear friends and gentle hearts.” One of his songs was published posthumously and became a favorite in music boxes. It was called “Beautiful Dreamer.”

Throughout his life, Stephen Foster used his meager piano skills to write songs that brought minstrel music to the masses. While many performers of the era mocked slaves with minstrel songs, Foster abhorred this and demanded that performers not talk down to slaves. He demanded performers understand the plight of the black community and have compassion for their fellow man. It was in this way that Stephen Foster transcended both musical genre and social convention, and it is part of the reason why the words and melodies of his songs have resonance today.

Anyone who loves Hawaiian music knows that the Hawaiian repertoire includes so many beautiful tunes, usually with equally beautiful words, that one’s favorite is likely to change at any moment.

Like, for instance, at the moment when you cue up the next CD, or open the pages of a songbook and begin to play. The one you’re listening to or singing right now is the best–or maybe it’s the one you played last night, still echoing in your mind!

But what the heck — let’s give it a try.

One place to start might be the special issue that Honolulu Magazine put out in June 2007: The 50 Greatest Hawaii Songs.

Not surprisingly, the expert panelists the magazine chose to vote for the songs they felt represented the best in Hawaii music put Aloha Oe in first place. This is, after all, the one Hawaii song that people around the world are most likely to have heard. It’s a song that raises “chicken skin” with its beauty and poignant words. The queen herself said it was a love song, but the rest of us think of it as a song of farewell and longing.

Their No. 2 choice was I’ll Remember You, by Kui Lee — another song of loving farewell and longing. In order, choices 3 through 10 were Honolulu City Lights, Hiilawe, Waikiki, Hawaii Aloha, Kuu Home o Kahaluu, Kaulana na Pua, Ke Kali Nei Au (The Hawaiian Wedding Song), and Morning Dew.

Now, those are all great songs. But I happen to favor the old-timers, particularly the Hawaiian language songs. In that list above, I’ll Remember You, Honolulu City Lights, Waikiki and Kuu Home o Kahuluu are all hapa haole songs, with primarily English lyrics.

Not that I’m opposed to hapa haole songs; one of my favorites is Haole Hula, which so eloquently expresses the yearning to share Hawaii’s beauty.

And when I asked my ukulele class buddies for their favorite songs, they listed Hanalei By Moonlight, White Sandy Beach and Honolulu I Am Coming Back Again. I’m always happy to hear any of those songs, and only politeness in a crowd will stop me from singing along any time they’re played.

But those old Hawaiian songwriters created melodies that still sound beautiful today, with words that seem to wind around each other like strands of pikake and maile in a lovely, fragrant lei.

When I look through my songbooks, and think about the songs that stick in my head, I remember the great Charles E. King, a composer of a century ago, who created songs like Lei Aloha Lei Makamae, Eleu Mikimiki and Lei Ilima.

Or how about Helen Desha Beamer, composer of a long list of songs that include Keawaiki, Kawohikukapulani and the Kimo Hula? Or what about David Nape’s Kuu Home, more commonly known as Old Plantation?

I’m just getting started here! It’s hard to say that any 10 songs are the best when it comes to Hawaiian music, never mind a single song. Ever since the missionaries brought western style melodies to combine with the Hawaiians’ poetic language and inborn musical talent, these islands have been producing great sounds.

Along with all the good old songs, we now have an outpouring of new talent producing great new songs in Hawaiian and in English.

No question about it. It’s just going to get harder to choose “the best” when it comes to Hawaiian music. We might as well simply enjoy it and be grateful that Hawaiian musicians have produced, and continue to produce, so many wonderful songs.

As for me, right this moment? My number one song today, the one that keeps running through my head, is Lena Machado’s 1946 Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi. The line that keeps coming back to me is “O ka nani ia o ka nani ia”: It is beautiful, so very beautiful. Somehow that seems the most appropriate line to be singing as I contemplate the best of Hawaiian music.

Saturday Night Fever - The Template For Club DJs And Disco Equipment

 The 1977 film ‘Saturday Night Fever’, in which John Travolta starred as angry Brooklyn youth Tony Manero whose life revolves around dancing, signaled the point where Disco became main-stream. Helped in no small part by a Grammy award winning soundtrack by The Bee Gees, the film, and the Disco phenomenon, went global and the world saw a huge demand for disco records, disco fashions and disco equipment. But disco had been around for many years before.

It is widely accepted that the first club nights that played what we call disco music appeared in New York in the early 1970’s. Although the disco equipment used at the time was not that dissimilar to that used by DJs playing other types of music. These clubs and club nights played exclusively dance music which encompassed rhythm and blues, soul and funk. It was therefore inevitable that disco music gravitated towards these venues and flourished.

In 1972 Manu Dibango released the single ‘Soul Makossa’. It received favorable radio play and copies were bought by club DJs who recognized its potential to fill dance floors. From these early beginnings as an underground movement, disco took. By 1974 it was a recognized genre with its own fashion, language and etiquette. Radio stations started broadcasting under the disco banner and sales of disco equipment increased as its popularity spread.

Disco was heavily influenced by the soul sounds coming out of cities like Philadelphia and New York and by Berry Gordy’s Motown record label in Detroit. The speed with which disco seemed to emerge from the 1960’s soul scene was helped by new recording techniques which were pioneered by a new breed of record producer. These new producers, including people like Mel Cheren and Marvin Schlachter, embraced new technology and found a new freedom in producing records and pushing the boundaries of recording and disco equipment.

Disco was liberating without being overtly political. Of course, the liberation has a political current that can be traced retrospectively, but unlike folk music and folk influenced rock music, the message was the medium. Disco was dance music at its most fundamental. It was stripped of all baggage, with the sole intention of getting people to dance together in clubs.

Disco is the point when DJs and DJing became bigger than the sum of its parts. Disco became an experience more than any dance music movement before it. There had always been fashions and styles connected to music but with disco, there was a bigger package. Flashing lights, glitter balls, big speakers and amplifiers and all manner of disco equipment became an important part of the disco statement.

So when John Travolta, twenty foot high on the silver screen, walked down the street to the strains of The Bee Gees singing ‘You can tell by the way I use my walk I’m a woman’s man’ everything was in place for disco to become the musical sensation that we now know it as.

When people criticize disco this is one of the aspects that they always mention. This apparent ’style over substance’ approach to music and performance was seen as juvenile by many and its apparent lack of a political manifesto, however small, upset many who thought music should stand for something other than hedonism. Of course they were missing the point. Disco was able to happen because of changes in politics and society and had repercussions that are still felt today.

He taught music in our company sponsored classes on each Sunday. I was already playing around with my guitar for a few months before I gathered enough courage to go and have a peek into his class.

A lot of people surrounded him as it was one introduction class and he was saying The first thing you need to do is to buy a guitar … and he explained what make the guitar should be etc…

So I joined the class and got his default indifference in return. I learned later that he was indifferent to you by default until you showed up at least 5 times in a row. Later I learned the reason most people came with visions of rock starts jumping around or lover boys sitting with a girl playing a song on guitar.

However, when they find out that they can’t even play a chord or a succession of 5 notes decently after 3 weeks of practice, their dreams give in to reality and their guitars put for sale in our company website.

Music teaching can be quite interesting as I became more proficient; I found a few wide-eyed ‘fans’ surrounding me. It appears that I was the only student among a hundred or so who could play the guitar and also sing decently at the same time.

So I became a little, half-learned teacher in my own right. The girls particularly seem quite fascinated with anybody just trying to sing, let alone somebody who can carry a tune to some degree of dignity.

So soon, I was a music teacher, however small time. I like this type, as they give me instant credit of teaching some trick so well. There are some who are stuck in a rut; they just keep playing the same thing for months without realizing that they havent really progressed. Then there are those who wouldnt finish a tune halfway before jumping to another.

I have developed my own tastes for students for whom I am really willing to spend some effort. Of course, all girls qualify, but for filtering others, I am learning my own (real) music teachers tricks on avoiding some and focusing on others. I think an 80/20 principle applies well to music teaching as in any job, which requires a lot of patience and hard work.

 A great way to inspire children to practice is to get them involved with a CD project. If you teach many students, each student could contribute a single track. With fewer students, each student could make his or her own CD. Sound hard? Its not.

With this software, an inexpensive microphone, some headphones, a digital camera, and an inkjet printer, you are ready to make CDs your students will want to give their family members for Christmas.

Overview

Record the student playing one or more pieces (or one piece from each of a group of students) in Audacity. Convert each recording to an mp3 file in Audacity and create a CD that can be played in a CD player. Take a picture of each contributor. Create the insert for the CD with the pictures, a track list, and something about each performer. Duplicate these and share them with your students.

Recording

With track recording software, you do not have to have two people in the same room at the same time in order to create a duet. Have one student record his or her part and give the other student a copy of that recording for practicing with. It takes time to learn how to play well with a recording.

To do have the second student record, open up the original students recording and have the second student put on the headphones. The second student listens to the first students track while playing his or her part.

Try this by yourself, recording multiple tracks, so you can help students learn the skill of keeping up. When students get the immediate feedback of hearing what they just recorded, they often work really hard to make it better.

CD Insert

Measure the plastic CD case so you know how big to make your insert. In publishing software or a word processor, you can set up a page with these dimensions. Use the margins on the word processor to create the size of paper you need for the insert. You can have students write a sentence about themselves as musicians, which is good psychologically because they start to think of themselves as having a musical identity.

You can even get printable CD labels that you can stick onto standard CDs, so you can put a track list on the actual CD.

Progress

It is nice over the years for families to have an actual record of their childs musical progress. Children also respond to hearing themselves play and to considering a year later what they have improved and even to think about what they would like to do next.
